John Keating

John Keating, 91, of 229 North Gilbert Street, died early Friday evening at his home following a short illness.

Funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick’s Church, with burial at the new section of St. Joseph’s Cemetery. The rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Donahue Mortuary where friends may call after 7 p.m. today.

Mr. Keating was born July 28, 1880 in Dunboyne, County Meath, Ireland, the son of Peter and Mary Plunkett Keating. He came to the U.S. and the Oxford area in 1905, returning to Ireland in 1909, where he married the Mary E. Rogers. The couple came back to Oxford, where they farmed until moving to Iowa City in 1922.

In Iowa City, he was a member of St. Patrick’s Church and the parish Holy Name Society. He was a former employee of Economy Advertising Company and the University of Iowa.

Surviving are a son, Joseph of Iowa City; five daughters, Mary E. and Irene B. Keating, Mrs. Joseph (Esther) Cox, and Mrs. Helen G. Organ, all of Iowa City; and Mrs. Edmund (Agnes) Volk of Oxford; four grandchildren, 11 great–grandchildren, and a brother, Peter, of Iowa City.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 1960 and six brothers.
