My family came from Barnaboy as well. I always had an unsubstantiated hunch that Micheal senior may have been the brother of my GGGrandfather, Peter (and his siblings Edward, Margaret, John, et al). His dad was Matthew and Mom was Margaret (Handibo). Micheal Sr died in Barnaboy in September 1894. If any of this strikes a cord, please come back -- I have lots of detail on Peter's family.

Francis Root Keating and Robert Keating Root are two separate men, probably brothers, the first born in Apr 1862 and the second in Jun 1866. They appear separately on the censuses, the first living with his father, Robert Keating; the second with his grandfather, Francis H Root. They married different women, the first Grace Brayley; the second, Emily Knowlton Davis (ca. 1889). The latter had no children. Because Robert Keating [adopted] Root was born in June 1862, the year his mother, Caroline Root Keating died, I assumed she died in childbirth. However, there is another child, Langford S. Keating, in the Root household, supposedly the son of Robert and Anna, his second wife. He was born in 1866 also. Can anyone explain where he came from?

I am also Irish, from Tipperary but now living in Spain and John I know you and knew your father, he was Dad´s cousin. He was also his best man and Godfater to my brother, Paul.
My late father (Pat Keating) was very active in the Keating history and gave many lectures on the subject over the years. However since his death 15 years ago, we among the family have not taken it up as much as we should have. The real fault lays with myself as I had always assumed the mantle of continuing the work.I used to help him out and worked as a librarian in Dublin for many years.
The notes are there (10+ years of research in the National Library and elsewhere, including Wales) but need to be collated and carefully edited. There is an abundance of material but a lot needs to be translated from the Latin which I sadly lack.
I suppose that having reached the 40´s, and living abroad, my sense of heritage is beginning to manifest itself with a greater sense of urgency.
Apart from that, there is another Keating on the way soon and we want to give he/her a real sense of family pride. I will do my best to get the material and make sense of it. But it would be great to have some support from Dublin.
All the best,

Seamus

The first Keating I am aware of is James de Keting mentioned in 1302 in Kerry.I was always of the opinion that we descended from a de Ketings who was a Norman mercenary baron. He arrived here with Strongbow in 1169 from Wales.
We are an Irish based branch of the family. My father was John Keating, my grandfather and great grandfather also. While I now live in Dublin,I am from Co Offaly as are my forebears. If any of our diaspora wish to contact me,feel free to pass on my email.

As legend has it (at least that with which I was brought up), Keating was rightly derived from "Céad Tine" or first fire. The first of the clan came from Wales before the "official" Norman invasion in 1169. Strongbow and his king Henry II, had long coveted the idea of an invasion of the country before invited by Dermot MacMorrough, the deposed King of Leinster. So in 1167, 2 years before the history books record, the first of the Normans "secretly" arrived in Wexford and lit fires on the coast of that county which was most accessible from Pembroke in Wales. This was done to signal to the incoming Norman invaders the most appropriate places to land their ships. Thus the name "first fire" becomes more poignant.

Chris, a monument was erected to Geoffrey Keating in 1990, funded by the local community. It can be found in Burgess which was his place of birth. I remember the occassion well. In attandance were many local people and dignitaries. The renouned Keating scholar, Dr.Pádraig Ó Fiannachta spoke very eloquently in both Irish and English and the Keating Clan Chieftain Patrick Keating pressed home the need to remember one of our greatest writers and historians.
It is modest memorial but fitting to commemorate such a great figure.
The church in Tubrid badly needs reperation, agreed. Attempts have been made in the past to keep the structure intact but funds are hard to come by as in all projects of this nature. There are an abundance of small national monuments that have fallen into disrepair and obviously local and central government (as well as ecclesiastical influences) prefer to focus on more "important" monument which are not lacking in the area. There are a number of Keating strongholds closeby which are also in ruins unfortunately. Coming from the area originally, it is great to return but sad to see our local and ancestral heritage in decay. The small local population have devoted what they can in terms of dedication and funding. It took a number of years to raise the money for the provision of the afore mentioned monument, but to raise a roof and reinforce the existing (delicate)structure of the Morturary Chapel in Tubrid exceeds existing expectations, although it is a great local aspiration.
I would have to disagree with you however when you state that it has been forgotten about, especially among the locals. There is great awareness and pride, especially in Ballylooby, Burgess and Tubrid (to name but a few of the local townlands that would love nothing more but to see their heritage renewed). If you come back again, you should make it your priority to meet those who are more knowlegable about local history as there are far Keating related sights to see in the area. In disrepair they may be, but they still hold a very special place in our hearts.

I am trying to sort out the Narraghmore Keatings. There is a Maurice who died in 1683 (brother of John Keating, Lord Chief Justice), and he had a son named Maurice. Is the the Maurice Keating who was M.P. for Kildare in 1725, or was there another generation in between them? Maurice Keating is also listed as M.P. in 1768. Again, my question is which one is this? And which Maurice Keating is the father of Juliana Keating (among others)? Were Catherine (later Wesley) and Anne Keating (later Carr) Juliana's sisters or aunts?
Thanks for any clarification that anyone can provide.

If there are any Keating researchers that ARE looking into the Texas Maryland Keatings, I would be interested in hearing from them. I am the historian and Texas descendant mentioned in the Sun article. I have several death certificates and plenty of census data on these Keatings, plus information from the St. Joseph's Jubilee published in 1927. Visit www.FriendsofTexasMaryland.org and contact me if you are related or just interested.

I am a English Keating of stock that has been resident in the Mancester area of England since 1900. Interesting my family is full of people called John.

I am interested in the photos above. I would like permission to use the third picture on my new company website WKD Sales, Marketing & Media

Would this be possible..If you would like any information on the Keatings of Cheetam Hill in Manchester pleaase let me know. It is some story, involving war heros, alcoholics, police officers, and gamblers. We are a large family.Keep up he good work....

Kathleen Keating is my aunt. My mother was Helen Keating of Winchester Virginia. (born 1902, married Laurence O'DOnnell Sullivanof Harrisonburg died late 1980's.)
Her father was William Keating of Winchester.
She had a brother, William who died around 1930 and a sister Nan Francis (married Thomas McGrail) who died around 1989.

Would be interested in hearing more about this family. I was aware of the Col John Keating connection as he did business in Winchester and I remember my mother speaking about him.

My family is also French Keatings. We are descendants of Louis Hugh Keating who arrived in Louisiana in 1815. He stated that he was born in Brest, France the son of Louis Keating and Anne Augnot (Augenot). My g-g-g-grandfather Louis Alclomar Keating corresponded with a "Dear Oncle" in Philadelphia who had previously lived at Newark (Delaware). I suppose this to be the Baron John Keating of Philadelphia but I have not been able to attach my family to this other French Keating family. I've also contacted the Keatings on Ile-Maurice (Mauritius) who we may well be related to as well.

This year Korby's daughter is getting married! The wedding shower is in the form of a party on the night of the reunion, so the Bob Bowman kids will not be there. Have a great time-Gail
