Today is the day that we Americans celebrate our declaration of independence from the British Empire. We often forget that it took a bit longer to enforce that declaration and another few decades to prove the point…

We also occasionally forget, while studying genealogy, that people are still arriving daily on our shores, following dreams similar to those that took our own ancestors to strange shores. This NPR story tells us of John Keating, a relatively recent immigrant from South Africa, who now lives in Belmont, North Carolina. Within a series on songs that we’ve discovered thanks to our parents, John talks of Neil Diamond’s “Coming to America“ and what it means to him.

The story: http://www.npr.org/2012/07/03/156210458/an-immigrants-tale-with-neil-diamonds-siren-song

Item the First – Website Hacked (and Cleaned)

At some point over the last six months, all of my web pages at DreamHost were hacked by an unknown attacker. As near as I can tell, the hack redirected visitors to sites chosen by the attacker. I believe I’ve managed to clean out all traces of the attack, but if you see anything strange, please let me know. My apologies to anyone that was affected by this. Luckily, DreamHost notified me of the attack and I was able to quickly clean it up. It has now been running cleanly for about a month.

In addition to redirecting some users, the other effect of the hack was to hide my site from search engines like Google (and from my home IP address). This meant that KeatingSearch.com completely disappeared from most search engine results. I saw this sudden falling in the rankings, but was attributing it to Google’s changed indexing practices. Oddly (for the attacker) this effect of the hack meant that fewer people visited the compromised website, which meant that fewer people were redirected to the attacker’s chosen sites. Since we’ve been back up, KeatingSearch.com has moved back to the first page of results for queries such as “Keating Genealogy”

Item the Second – Obituary Abstracts

From this point forward, obituaries currently copyrighted will be abstracted. When available, a link will be provided to the original website, and I’ll provide a citation regardless of whether it is online or off. I’ll also be slowly converting existing articles containing obituaries to abstracts. While copying the text of obituaries is a common practice in genealogy (and generally overlooked), obits are covered by copyright law. While I’ve never been asked to remove any of the obituaries on the site, I want to keep things on the up-and-up while still providing the data from the obituaries to the reader.

Ray Dale “Papa” Keating Jr., 85, born June 3, 1926, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, to Ray and Christina Keating, died suddenly Wednesday, Jan. 25, at Kingman Regional Medical Center in Kingman.

Ray, adored husband and father, joined the U.S. Navy in 1944 and served in World War II as a Specialist 3rd Class. He lived in Southern California until 1992, where he was a carpenter who owned a construction company. Following his time in California, he moved to Kingman.

Ray was a member of the American Legion Post 817 in Panorama City, Calif., serving the post with great pride and becoming Commander in 1980-81.

As a member of the VFW Post 10386 in Kingman, he served as commander four times, showing his great dedication to the veterans in the community and throughout Mohave County. He will be remembered for his many contributions to the VFW. His annual corned beef and cabbage dinners will be missed.

Ray, known affectionately as “Uncle Sonny” to his many nieces and nephews, enjoyed living in Arizona, spending time working in his shop and yard. When time permitted, he packed the trailer and he and his wife, Dottie, would spend time camping and fishing in Williams or at Willow Beach.

Ray was honored as the grand marshal in the Kingman Veterans Day Parade in November 2011. He enjoyed a full and happy life and was kind to all those he met. He provided his family with love and support, and will be missed by all those whose lives he touched.

Ray is survived by his wife of 33 years, Dorothy; five daughters, Debbie, Mary, Donna, Brenda and Judith Anne; and two sons, Bobbie and Mac. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren; and his three sisters, Eleanor, Betty and Joyce.

Awaiting Ray in his new Heavenly home are his parents, brother, other family members and many wonderful friends.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, at the VFW Post 10386 located at 3036 John L Ave., Kingman.
